Hurricane, typhoon and tropical cyclone: what they mean

These terms describe tropical cyclones in different ocean basins. Hurricane is used in the North Atlantic and northeastern Pacific, typhoon in the northwestern Pacific, and tropical cyclone in other regions. Wind strength alone does not describe every hazard. Heavy rainfall can cause flooding far from the centre; waves and elevated sea levels add coastal hazards. When might a cyclone approach a place?

Location forecasts display a notice when a recent forecast track brings the centre near the point. The time window estimates closest approach, not an exact impact time. Centre distance does not predict effects in individual neighbourhoods. Advisories older than 24 hours are excluded from new automatic proximity notices.

A GDACS event notice is not an official local warning. Where an active relevant US NWS alert is returned, it is explicitly identified as official. For other countries, use the WMO warning portal and the local meteorological service. GDACS · NWS alerts · WMO warnings

Mediterranean medicanes: Greece, the Ionian and Aegean

A medicane is a Mediterranean cyclone that develops tropical-like characteristics during part of its evolution. It may exhibit organised central convection and a warm core. An eye-like feature alone is not enough for diagnosis. Predictability depends on atmospheric circulation and the physical processes represented by forecast models. The global tropical cyclone catalog does not guarantee coverage of every medicane. Use satellite imagery alongside point forecasts, model comparisons and ensembles. The 850 hPa temperature helps describe the air mass; by itself it is not a medicane formation indicator.
